The château is associated with a number of remarkable women, including Henri II's mistress, Diane de Poitiers, to whom he gave the château, and his wife, Catherine de Medici, who took it back after his death in 1559. The interior was decorated with large arrangements of fresh flowers, fruits and herbs, whose fragrance permeated the air.
